POPPY DAY APPEAL.

Hopes of Exceeding Last Year’s Total. It is. expected that the proceeds from the annual Poppy Day appeal, which is to be held in Christchurch to-mor-row, will exceed the £1222 collected last j-ear. Between 200 and 300 collectors will be stationed at various points in the city, and they will have 30,000 poppies to dispose of at Is each. Collectors will be busy from 7 a.m., and will continue their good work until the shops close. They will consist mostly of representatives from women’s organisations. It is intended, if possible, to give a concert from the balcony of the United Service Hotel. The Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association orchestra has offered its services for the occasion. Poppy Day is for remembrance, and the funds collected are devoted to services for unemployed returned soldiers and their dependants. Buyers of poppies are asked to wear them on Anzac Day as well as to-morrow, and those who attend the Anzac Day service in the King Edward Barracks may place their poppies in a receptacle, to be collected and placed on returned soldiers’ graves at Bromley Cemetery.
