Request for Standard Pay for Drainage Work. On the ground that the work is not a utility one; the Christchurch Drainage 7>? arc * as re^us ed a request by the Christchurch Unemploved Workers Association for the payment of standard rates of pay for drainage work being carried out in connection with the reconstruction of Riccarton Avenue „. M’Donald) stated this morning that the drain required considerable timbering, and his association maintained that the job came under the heading of skilled work. The Drainage Board had been approached and asked to pay standard rates of pay to the men engaged on the work, but it had definitely stated that the undertaking was not a utility job. Ihe position hpd also been placed before the General Labourers’ Union which proposed to ask the board to pay full rates for the work. An official of the Drainage Board stated this morning that the work was not a utility one, and would not have r en , one but f°r the reconstruction of the road. It was actually not necessary for the road, and involved the straightening up of a drain just beyond the cricket ground.
