Committee Chairman Honoured.

At the conclusion of the meeting of householders at the West Lyttelton School on Monday night. Mr J. Preston, expressed the appreciation of the householders of the valuable services given by the retiring chairman, Mr E. Weastell. Mr Weastell had been of great help to the teaching staff and had assisted to raise the standard of the school. The householders appreciated his work and also the work of the committeemen who had served under his chairmanship. The head master, Mr U. Gabites, said he could speak with the knowledge of what was done behind the scenes. He had never seen the work of a committee carried out more thoroughly. This was due to the team work of the whole committee which made the work easy for all. In responding, Mr Weastell said that he desired a rest from the duties of chairman of the committee. He had always endeavoured to foster the social life of the children as much as possible. He might seek re-election on the committee at some future time. Billiards Tourney. C. Toy won this week’s flying fifty billiards tournament, played at the Lyttelton Club on Monday evening. S. Thurlow was runner up. Juvenile Lodge. The City of Korwick Juvenile Lodge has arranged to hold a series of winter tournament evenings, following the lodge meetings each fortnight. The first gathering last evening was well attended. The competitions included shooting, cards, draughts and quoits. Fire Prevention Week. In connection with Fire Prevention Week, the Lyttelton Fire Brigade Station is being kept open for inspection by the public during the week, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. British Sailors’ Society. The annual meeting of the Lyttelton Ladies’ Guild of the British Sailors’ Society was held in the Seamen’s Institute last evening, Mrs C. W. Maclaverty presiding over a good attendance. The following executive committee was elected;—President, Mrs C. W. Maclaverty; vice-presidents, Mesdames H. Ilatchwell and E. Wilson; secretary, Miss R. Hatchwell; assistant secretary, Miss A. Voyce; treasurer, Mrs J. T. Norton. At the conclusion of the business monologues were given by Mrs F. Priddy, songs bv Miss M. Hatchwell, a j piano solo by Master D. Zander and a dance by Miss Z. Zander.
