ARMOURED CAR.

First to be Built in Australia. ' MELBOURNE. April 12. Australia’s first armoured car, it was learned to-day, is now in the process of manufacture at the Government munition works at Marlbyrnong. When completed, it will be attached to the armoured car unit of the Militia, which has been set up at Horsham. The production of armoured cars in Australia is part of the Commonwealth Government’s policy to mechanise the military forces, and was decided upon after exhaustive tests had been made with “ knock up ” or dummy armoured Experiments were first made with an armoured ” body of three-ply wood, and later with mild steel, and these were so successful that it was considered that the production of armoured cars in Australia, and their successful operation was possible. The plan is to proceed with production on a limited scale until a design suitable for Australian conditions is perfected. The armour—bullet-proof steel—has been imported from England.
