ANZAC DAY.

Compulsory Holiday is Opposed. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, April IS. Expressing his views as an ex-soldier, Mr J. G. Jeffery, speaking at a meeting of the Manufacturers’ Association, stated that he was strongly opposed to the observance of Anzac Day as a compulsory holiday. In no other part of the Empire was a full holiday observed, he said. For a similar anniversary in Australia, a halt of only two hours was made, but in New Zealand not only was a full day’s production lost, but further time also because there were lengthy industrial processes that could not be carried out with a mid-week holiday. He suggested a ceremonial observance on a Sunday. It was decided to embody these views in a remit to the conference of the Federation.
