SHIPS DELAYED.

Waterside Troubles at Lyttelton.

Three further labour disputes occurred on the Lyttelton waterfront yesterday with the result that the Government motor ship Maui Pomare did not work between 4 and 5 p.m., and no overtime was worked on the S.S, and A. Co. chartered steamer Canonesa. No reason was given for the men’s refusal to work overtime The hatches of the steamer Reiyo Maru were taken off before 8 a.m. yesterday by members of the crew. This work is usually done by the waterside workers, but no ship’s watersiders are empjoyed on the steamer, which is discharging bulk sulphur by means of grab cranes. The men employed by the Railway Department receiving the cargo into trucks made a claim for time which they stated they lost through the crew removing the hatches. The matter was consideied by the Local Disputes Committee, which has not yet arrived at a decision, and the men continued at work yesterday. Shortly after four o’clock in the afternoon a dispute occurred over the working of the Maui Pomare. While the vessel was discharging bananas into covered “ K ” waggons, four extra men were engaged by the Railway Department. When the work of discharging was concluded, these extra men were dismissed The other railway watersiders protested and ceased work about 4.15. Subsequently, arrangements were made for the four men to be kept on to enable the vessel to complete loading casewood, so that she could sail for Wellington, where she is to discharge the remainder of her cargo of bananas to-day. The third trouble occurred at the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s steamer Canonesa. When the men were ordered back to work overtime from six o’clock they declined, without giving any reason, and the vessel remained idle all the evening. Work was resumed on the Canonesa this morning.
