PRISONERS SENTENCED.

WELLINGTON, April 17. Prisoners sentenced by* Mr Justice Reed in the Supreme Court to-day* included : Howard Godfreys Pudney, on two charges of breaking, entering and theft, three years’ detention in a Borstal Institute. Lawrence Ilenrv Diamond, breaking, entering and theft, two years’ reformative detention. William Edwards, six charges of breaking, entering and theft, and one of theft, eighteen months’ reformative detention on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent Hector Howard Capil, two charges of indecent assault on a male, twelve months’ hard labour Ringa Whati Panirau, unlawful carnal knowledge, was sentenced to twelve months’ hard labour. His Honor said that young girls amongst the Maoris must be protected and the only way to protect them was to punish where a case was proved. Probation for a Maori was of little use. It was absolutely necessary in the interests of the Maori race that there should not be a lot of stunted growths. William Henry Gardiner, theft and four charges of breaking, entering and theft, was admitted to probation for three years and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution.
