THEFT ALLEGED.

Two Men Arrested After Chase. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 16. Hearing a smashing of glass in Dixon Street at midnight. Constables Phillips and Wilson, who were on duty nearby, investigated and found that a glass door in R. Hannah and Co.’s premises had been broken. Their suspicions were aroused by the actions of two men walking along Dixon Street, and the constables endeavoured to stop them. One man showed fight, and the other decamped up an alleyway. The first man was overpowered, and the other was subsequently found in a house into which he had fled. A number of pairs of shoes were found in the yard. To-dav William Murphy, a labourer, aged thirty, and Joseph O'Shea, a fireman, aged thirty-four, were charged in the Magistrate’s Court with breaking and entering Hannah and Co.’s premises and stealing £5 5s worth of shoes. Accused were remanded till April 24. The premises of Star Stores. Kilbirnie, were entered during the week-end and a quantity of groceries and tobacco was stolen.
