OFFICER FAREWELLED.

Tributes to Sub-Inspector Edwards; Sub-Inspector G. B. Edwards, who leaves for Auckland to-morrow evening to take office in that city, was farewelled this morning at a special sittmg of the Magistrate’s Court. Messrs A - Young, S.M., and E. D. Mosley. S.M., were on the Bench, and there were present representatives of the legal profession, Government departments and the Court officials. Mr Mosley said that it was with great regret that they were parting the sub-inspector. Sub-Inspector Edwards had been stationed in Christchurch for some two j’ears, and during that period had shown the greatest sense of his responsibility as prosecutor. He had been exemplary in his courtesy to the Bench and had shown the greatest kindness to those who were in the unfortunate position of being prosecuted. Fl e had done his dutv in a very fair way. He hoped that-.aV some future date Sub-Inspector Edwards would be returning to Christchurch to fill a higher office than that he was now holding. Mr H. A. Young said that when he had been in Hamilton some time before he had known Sub-Inspector Edwards as a sergeant, and had learned to respect him both in that position and in the one in which he was now holding. Mr C. S. Thomas, president of the Canterbury Law Society, and Mr R. Twvneham also expressed their sorrow at saying farewell to the sub-inspector. There had never been a police officer with whom the profession had been on better terms than Sub-Inspector Edwards. said Mr Thomas. They had always found him scrupulously fair and never ungenerous. Mr W. 11. Darby, Probation Officer, and Mr A. Fyfe, cf the Court staff, expressed their regard for the sub-inspec-tof. He was an expert in matters pertaining to the Licensing Law and in sections of the criminal code, said Mr Fyfe, and had never been sparing of his assistance when it was required. Sub-Inspector Edwards said that his stay in Christchurch had been a very enjoyable one. His associations with the Court officials and the legal profession had been of the happiest. Tie thanked them all f«r their kind expressions of regard.
