MOTORIST FACES SERIOUS CHARGE. Girl Cyclists Injured. “ MAK ACTED IK SPIRIT OF BRAVADO.” Per Press Association. AUCKLAND. April 16. David Robert John Ellis, twentyfive years of age, appeared before Mr Justice Ostler to-day for sentence on charges of negligently driving a car and causing bodily injury while intoxicated His car ran down and injured two girl cyclists and drove on. Coilnsel said that on the day of the accident accused’s fiancee broke off their engagement, and probably in a spirit of bravado he had taken drink and set out in the car with anothei man. The judge said that if a man chose to get drunk and then injured another person he could not expect probation. In view of counsel’s remarks, and the fact that prisoner had to face another charge in the Police Court, his Honor said he would reduce by half the sentence he felt inclined to inflict. The prisoner was sentenced to three months’ hard labour.
