AUNT HILDA’S LETTER.

WHAT OF THE WINTER? The Little Hands of Star land Help. J)EAR STARLETS;— Fast on the departing days of autumn comes the winter, with its beauties and, alas! its miseries keenly accented, and again we send out the call for Starlets to do their bit and extend the helping hand wherever it may be needed. While there is a brighter tone everywhere and news from abroad is ever more encouraging, we have a long way to travel out of the wood. Some thousands of small feet will be blue this winter, some thousands of beautiful little bodies will be thinly covered against the biting sou’-west wind. Aunt Hilda once again appeals to Starlets for active and practical* help. Nearly all of you can knit. Wool is still cheap and very pretty. Peggy squares, mittens, gloves, socks, singlets, petticoats, crowds and crowds of things we can use and be grateful for. Who hears the wail of the children who are not getting a square deal? Who feels acutely the ache in those toes and fingers? Our gifts are given freely and willingly and without publicity. Now just who can hear this very earnest and real plea? Can’t we all just band together and do at least one thing for someone alse BEFORE the winter comes? Sitting round pur fire we can work for those who perhaps have to go to a thinly-covered bed because there is no fire for them to sit by. Lucky are we, and grateful we should be! We can show that gratitude by doing our bit and doing it with a gladsome mind, a light heart, and skilful fingers. If you can think of any special way to help, write and tell us. You might think of things we would miss. Who can tell us what we might be able to do? And who is reaching for the needles and wool? The boys can help, too, for lots of boys knit really well. Think of the beauty all around, and of the distress looming up with the advent of winter. Shall we say 1000 Peggy squares to start with? We could ever so easily do it. Who’s getting busy? Where are my number nines and that odd ball of four-ply? And where are my clever and helpful Starlets? Write and tell me what you will undertake to make. Ilappy thoughts to you all, —
