TROTTING

Acceptances for the Kaikoura -*■ Trotting Club’s meeting are due on Monday, at 9 p.m. * * * * Acceptances for the trotting events at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting are due on Monday. Nominations for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting will close on at 5 pan. Entries for the trotting events at the Marlborough Racing Club’s autumn meeting will close on Monday. * * * ❖ Acceptances for the trotting events to be decided at the Amberley Racing Club’s meeting will close on April 20. * * * * Acceptances for the Te Aroha Trotting Club’s annual meeting will close on April 17. * * * * Acceptances for the Auckland Trotting Club's autumn meeting are due on April 20. * * * * Nominations for the trotting events to be decided at the Southland Racing Club’s winter meeting will close on April 20. DUNDEE BUSY. R. B. Berry is keeping the pacer Dundee up to the collar. At Addington yesterday the gelding paced a mile and a half nicely in 3min 26sec. * * * * War Bird, who was sold recently for a few pounds, paced two rpiles at Addington on Tuesday in 4min 35sec. He is now in E. C. M’Dermott’s stable. DOING WELL. Isobel Patch is shaping well in her track work. At Addington on Tuesday she trotted a mile and a half in 3mm 30sec, and did it well. The Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting * m * * to be held on May 12 clashes with the second day of the Southand Racing Club’s meeting. The clash may cause a split in the patronage likely to come from Dunedin. BIDDY PARRISH’S SPEED. It is possible to derive compensating pleasure in defeat. Mr G. J. Barton was so pleased with Biddy Parrish’s brilliancy on the final day at Addington when she went 3min 17 3-ssec in the High-class Trotters’ Handicap to finish third to Worthy Queen 3min 14 l-ssec and First Wrack 3min 18 2-ssec, that he contemplates bringing his mare down and sending her an exhibition mile at Forbury Park (states the “Otago Daily Times”). Biddy Parrish trotted like clockwork over the final mile of her race, and private watches made her go 2min 3sec from post to post over the final mile. She, of course, was racing at top when beginning the mile. Biddy Parrish is a bit doubtful at the start of a race, but when once balanced in her gait she can go a merry clip. Her possibilities on the score of breeding suggest speed, as she was got by Guy Parrish from Rose Peters, by Petereta —Rose Elect, by Electioneer—Wild Rose, by Childe Harold. CHANGE OF TRAINERS. The Epsom trotting trainer, A. W. Broughton, has received two additions to his team, namely, Peter Pirate and Singing Bird. Peter Pirate, who is held on lease b}' Mr M. J. Moodabe, won two useful races in the spring for R. D. Kennerley, and after the Auckland summer meeting was turned out for a spell. He has done well during the holiday and will be prepared for the winter meeting. Singing Bird is a maiden trotter by Guy Parrish, and was at one time trained at Epsom, and later by T. Roe, for whom she showed a good deal of promise. With Free Logan, Wee Parrish and Stormy Mack, as well as the tw’o newcomers, Broughton has a useful string for the coming fixtures. DOUBLE-GAITED HORSES. The Nelson trotting trainer, L. F. Berkett, established something of a record on the recent trotting circuit on the W T est Coast of the North Island with double-gaited horses. At the trotting gait at Wanganui Wrackless won two races, and, converted to pacing at Hawera, secured some place-money. Tasman Flight, who won races at Westport and Greymouth as a trotter, filled several minor places as a pacer at Wanganui and Hawera, and finished the tour by winning a trotting race at Manawatu. Fleet Arrow raced at Wanganui as a pacer and was put to the trotting gait at Hawera, securing place-money at each meeting. Berkett is a strong believer in trying his horses at both gaits and in this respect he has a strong supporter in J. E. Smith, who trains and races the good, horse Smooger in both departments. KEWPIE’S TRIUMPH, The Aucklander Kewpie’s Triumph disappointed with his displays at the New Zealand Metropolitan meeting, as, after being in a prominent position at the straight entrance, he failed to put any dash in his final effort and finished well back on each occasion. Prior to going to Addington Kewpie’s Triumph went two miles in 4min 25sec, a particularly fast work-out for the Epsom track (says an Auckland writer), and it was quite surprising to note him failing so badly, and the only excuse that may be advanced is that the class of horse competing at the meeting was a little too good for the Aucklander.

The good but very unlucky pacer Neeoro, who has met with more accidents than any other horse, is meandering round the pasture at Oakhampton Lodge. He may be trained by J. Bryce later on. FOR AUCKLAND. * * Mr L. S. Martin and W. M’Kay will leave for Auckland on Thursday next with Walla Walla and Auburn Lad. Both horses are engaged at the Auckland and the Northland Trotting Club’s meetings, which will be held at Epsom on April 28 and 30 respectively. * * * * The very promising pacer Marie Celeste, who created a big impression last season, is now attached to M. C. M’Tigue’s stable. Marie Celeste is an aged mare by Man o’ War from Princess Zoe, and she has a big future. PROMISING TWO-YEAR-OLD. W. J. Doyle’s very promising two year-old by Rey de Oro from Lady Brent has been named Subsidy. This young pacer is engaged in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, and is regarded very highly by his owner. # * * * O. E. Hooper has the novice trotter Beatrice Bingen in his stable. She is owned by Mr M. M’Grath, and is by Nelson Bingen from Qtleen Wilkes. IN TOWN LEY’S STABLE. The aged trotting gelding Bingen Lin is now attached to R. Townley’s stable at Washdyke. Bingen Lin has a lot of speed, and under the tuition of such a past-master with trotters as R. Townley has proved to be, Bingen Lin may make amends for his many disappointments. GANTON SOLD, The six-year-old gelding Ganton has been sold by R. W. Franks to a patron of F. J. Smith’s stable at Takanini. Ganton is by Drusus from Estella Amos, the dam of Indianapolis. Ganton won two races at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting last season, and may do well in the North Island. * * * * The Manawatu Trotting Club was so delighted with the exhibition given by Harold Logan at its recent meeting that it handed a cheque to Mr E. F. C. Hinds, owner of Harold Logan, soon after the champion returned to the enclosure. HAROLD LOGAN POPULAR. When Harold Logan went out to give his mile exhibition at the Manawatu Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday he was accorded a great reception by the large crowd. Nelson’s Chum (L. F. Berkert) and Tenedos (A. B. De Malmanche) were chosen as the pacemakers, Nelson’s Chum taking the first half. Driven by L. O. Thomas, who was behind the champion at Addington when he registered his world’s two miles record of 4min 13 2-ssec, Harold Logan went away several lengths behind Nelson’s Chum. Reaching the first quarter in 32 4-ssec, he passed the half-mile in lmin 4 2-ssec. where Tenedos, who was to pick hfm up, refused to go away. Nelson’s Chum continued to make the- pace, but at the home turn Harold Logan ran past the pacemaker and, without being unduly hustled in. the run home, completed the mile in 2min llsec, on a flat tyre. OAMARU PROGRAMME. The Oamaru Trotting Club is to be congratulated upon the programme framed for its winter meeting, which is set down for Saturday, May 12. All told, the large sum of £I3BO will be distributed in stakes. The Invitation Match is endowed with £3OO, and the President’s Handicap is also worth £3OO. This race is for horses that can do 4min 33sec or better. The chief sprint event is the Enfield Handicap, of £2OO, for horses that can traverse a mile and a quarter in 2min 46sec or faster. The remainder of the programme is well balanced, and the arranging of the classes is the result of much consideration. The Innovation Handicap, of £IOO, for unhoppled trotters that can do 3min 50sec or better, and the Waikaura Handicap, of £l2O also for trotters, is a 3min 45sec class’ both being mile and a half races.
