There are marked signs of returning prosperity in England, according to Captain A. W. Pearse, Sydney and New Zealand representative of the Port of London Authority, who is at present in Christchurch. “ I spent several months in England last year, and it was very apparent that the depression was fast disappearing,” he said in an interview. “ I saw no beggars and no ragged people. Particularly was this so in the South of England. London and the south-east is, without doubt, the most prosperous part of the country, and unemployment is much less. This means that there is much greater spending power within the economic radius of London, and therefore it is the best place to sell produce.”
