CAR EXPLOSION.
Relief Worker Badly Hurt. GELIGNITE THEORY. AUCKLAND. April 12. A mysterious explosion wrecked the engine of a motor-car in the Birke.ihead Borough Council’s yard this morning. A relief worker named Thomas Barker was struck by flying metal and suffered serious head :njuries. Four others narrowly escaped The car, which is used daily, was being cranked by the council’s timekeeper, C. Hayson, when the explosion occurred. Fragments of the engine flew in every direction, and Barker was struck near one eye. He bled profusely. It is believed that the explosion was caused by gelignite which had been placed in the engine. No explosives are kept in the council yard. The car had been used daily by the borough overseer, C. Bridge. The police are investigating.
