EIGH TY- THREE YEARS OF PROGRESS IN CARPET WEA VINO Hyde Park Exhibition -—lßsl the “ Illustrated London News " of May 3. 1851. we learn: ' “ On Thursday. the lst of May. 1851. the Crystal Palace of Industry was inaugurated by the Queen, accompanied by Prince Albert, the Prince of ' “’ales, the Princess Royal, and attended by a magnificent and glittering cortege. “ The centre part of the intersection of naves and transept was set apart for her Majesty and her court. “Along the galleries of the main avenue. the department for British goods, a succession of the most beautiful carpetry was suspended like bannerets, only more splendid. in a knightly hall of old. “Everything stood revealed at its best and the vista along the whole line was perhaps the most splendid and extensive, as a piece of art and human contrivance ever presented to human view." The leading manufacturers of the world sent their goods to London for this great Exhibition—and amongst them was John Crossley & Son, manu- _ facturers of those fine carpets and tapestries which formed so . splendid a background to the magnificent royal opening ceremony. ' An article in “The Illustrated London News ” of May 10th. 1851, draws particular attention to John Crossley’s workmanshipz— “ Among the glories of the Exhibition must be reckoned its carpets and the amazing progress in design cannot fail to strike every observant person. . . . . Messrs Crossley's display of patent tapestry is made upon the wall of the south gallery and is one . . . . which does infinite credit to the producers.” One of the Exhibition Carpets is in New Zealand to-day. This Carpet, as bright in colour today as the day it was woven, measures 18ft 6in by 27ft 3in, and was_ woven in two parts.
