HUNGER MARCH.
Proposals of Unemployed Workers. Unemployed workers throughout New Zealand are discussing a proposal to conduct a national hunger march, during the next Parliamentary session in support of a demand for the resignation of the Unemployment Board, the putting into operation of the sustenance clauses of the original Unemployment Act, and the restoration of all cuts in salaries, wages and pensions. Relief workers in Christchurch are being asked to express their opinion on this proposal or any alternative to achieve the same end. At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Unemployed Workers’ Association, at the Trades Hall last night, emphatic opposition was reiterated to the system of charity relief depots, and the opinion was recorded that it was the duty of society to inaugurate a scheme to provide the necessities of life, and all the amenities deemed necessary without attaching the stigma of charity. A delegate who was sent by the Hanmer camp to ask for assistance in any action in opposition to the reduction of the food allowance was assured of support. Lyttelton Matters. It was also resolved to support the Lyttelton Unemployed Workers’ Association in opposing the threatened introduction of task work at Diamond Harbour and the penalising of men who got work on the wharves. 1 The following office-bearers were elected: President. Mr A. E. Arm- : strong: vice-president, Mr A. B. ■ Blance; secretary, Mr 11. Macdonald: assistant-secretary, Mr 11. Livingstone: • executive, Messrs L. Burney, W. G GlanvilJe, R. Burgess, F. Price, I ■ M’Guire. A. Erikson, R Harrison, E. W. Braithwaite and A. Robinson. « It was decided to accept an invi- • tation to a combined May Day celebration on Sunday, April 29.
