OBITUARY.
Mrs Caroline Buckland. Mrs Caroline Buckland, widow of the late Mr John Channing Buckland, died on Mondav at her home, The Glen, Akaroa, after a lengthy illness. The late Mrs Buckland was bom at Onehunga, Auckland, in 1848. She was the daughter of the Rev William Fairburn, who came to New Zealand as a missionary with Bishop Selwyn. Mrs Buckland was christened by Bishop Selwyn and as her mother died at her birth, the child was brought up by an uncle and educated in England. Returning to New Zealand she married the late Mr Buckland, in 1867, at Auckland, where they-lived for some time during the Maori wars. Mr Buckland took part in the war in the Waikato serving with Captain Nixon's volunteers. After residing at Otahutu Auckland for some time, Mr Buckland engaged in farming at Timaru near Waikouaiti and later at Tireri, Lake Station. He represented Waikouaiti in 1884 and for four sessions served in Parliament. Later the family moved to Akaroa and bought the Mount Bossu Station at Wainui, in 1902. Mr Buckland died in 1909. Mrs Buckland had lived a retired life for manv years, but she was always greatly interested in horticulture .and had an excellent collection of trees from all over the world. The members of the familv are Messrs W. H. Buckland (Wainui), Alfred Buckland (Otorohanga) Arthur Buckland (Central Otago), Herbert Buckland (Cronadun, West Coast), Mrs L. X. Orbell (Y\ inchester. South Canterbury), and Miss J. C. Buckland (Akaroal. Another daughter, Miss C. Buckland died at Akaroa some years ago.
