PIGEON FLYING

Canterbury Club Holds Annual Derby. The Canterbury Pigeon Flying Club recently flew off its annual Derby young bird race from Blenheim, eighty-five birds being sent, divided amongst eighteen owners. The birds were liberated at 10 a.m. in fine weather and a light -nor’-west wind, which enabled the birds to put up fair times. The lofts were divided into two sections, east and west. The winner turned out to be T. V. Cooke's No. 815. which flew the distance of 162 miles 1200 yards in 4hr 7min 31sec. The following are the velocities recorded:— Western Section. Yds per min. T. V. The club flew off another race from Culverden, 120 birds being sent, divided amongst twenty owners. The birds were liberated at 12.46 p.m., in good weather, a nor’-east wind prevailing. The birds were liberated by the stationmaster at 12.30 p.m., in fine weather. The winning bird, owned by R. M’Lennan, flew the thirty miles airline ,in forty-four minutes. Results: —R. M’Lennan’s Blue Belle, 1196yds per min; W. Fine’s My Pick, 1020; Belcher and Buckingham’s Blue Boy, 1014; K. Bennett’s Blue Diamond, 990; S. Light’s Stayer, 954; M. Richard’s Rolo, 948; J. M”Ginn’s Blue Ace, 942; J. Hart’s Fireworks, 938; A. Mercer’s Black Forest, 906-, B. Densem’s Bete Noir, 804. R. M’Lennan won the nominated bird prize. Bast Christchurch Club. The East Christchurch Pigeon Flying Club flew the final race of the young bird programme from Blenheim last week-end. Good conditions prevailed throughout; the race resulted in fine times being recorded, and very little divided the prize-winners. The winning bird, owned by Mr W. Henry, flew the distance of 161 miles in 3hrs 56min. Results:—W. Henry’s Lady Evans, 119 Byds per min; R. V. Bradley’s Wise Choice, 1197; B. Campbell’s Sweet Agnes, 1195; L. Brown’s Lord Baker. 1169: G. MacDougall’s Battle Cry, 1165; H. F. Evans s Mv Surprise, 1054; L. Rolton’s Charm, 999; T. Nicholson’s Plus Fours, 950. It. v.
