The Hermit of Grub Street, who lived in the seventeenth century, would sit, knife in hand, before a liberal Christmas dinner, carve each course as it arrived, and send it to a poor neighbour. Then, without having touched a morsel, he would lay aside his napkin, say grace and repeat the ceremony at supper!
