POSED AS CAPTAIN.
Official Deludes British Legion. LONDON, April 3. A man who was stated to have posed for years as Captain Brooks, M.C., the holder of the D.C.M.. the M.S.M., the French Croix de Guerre and the Mons Star, stood in the dock at Marylebone. He w*as revealed to be ex-Corporal Harry Paul Brooks, of the Signal Corps, who was entitled to no rations save the British War and Victory medals. Brooks (34), formerly of Stewart Avenue, West Hendon, and now of Gloucester Road, Regent’s Park, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment in the second division on charges of forging a voucher for clothes and a cheque, while acting as honorary secretary of the Hampstead branch of the British Legion and United Services Fund. Mr J. Russell, counsel for the British Legion, said that by forging vouchers and cheques in favour of non-existent persons, Brooks had defrauded the fund cf about £2OO. On hearing the sentence Brooks collapsed and had to be carried out of court.
