MR CHURCHILL’S “YES.”

A German Undergraduate’s Challenge. LONDON, April 2. A verbal duel with a young German undergraduate on the question of Germany’s responsibility for the Great War was an incident of Mr Winston Churchill’s visit to the Oxford University Conservative Club. Undergraduates were allowed to ask any questions they liked. Mr A. F. K. Schlepergrell questioned Mr Churchill closely as to whether he considered Germany had been fairly treated by the Allies since the war, and at last he asked: “Will you give me an answer. Yes or No, to the question: ‘ Do you think the German people were responsible for the war?’” Mr Churchill advanced slowly to the dispatch box and, glancing at his young questioner, replied, “ Yes.” Immediately Mr Schlepegrell rose and, to the accompaniment of cheers from the crowded audience, strode from the hall.
