TIME OFF TO SMOKE.
Auckland Watersiders Make Protest. (Special to the “ Star.*’) AUCKLAND. April 10. On the stroke of ten o’clock yesterday the watersiders -working the steamers Rotorua and Cumberland at the Queen’s Wharf stopped work and gathered in the open for a smoke. A quarter of an hour later they resumed work. Other vessels in port were not affected. It is understood that the stoppage was a protest by the men concernmg the prohibition of smoking by 'men working the ships. Afternoon and evening “smokos” were also taken. Officials of the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union said that they had no statement to make on the matter at present. The local office of the New Zealand Shipping Company, the owners of the Rotorua and agents for the Federal steamer Cumberland, also declined to comment. The Rotorua is discharging cargo from England, and the Cumberland is completing her cargo for London and the West Coast ports of Great Britain.
