Dr William M’Ara, of Gore, who died in Auckland on Sunday, was a member of the Otago University senior Rugby team from 1895 to 1900, being captain in his last year. He was a contemporary of N. Fell, who afterwards won international honours for Scotland, and was second five-eighth to the All Black, Jimmy Duncan, in the Otago team of 1897-98. Dr M’Ara was educated at Wellington College, being coached by the late Mr J. P. Firth. He was a back of real class, and one of the most popular players to wear the Otago and University jerseys. There is power in the direct glance of a sincere and loving human soul, which will do more to dissipate prejudice and kindle charity than the most elaborate arguments.—George Eliot.
