EASY OPTIMISM.
Author on Australian Character. LONDON, March 26. After three years’ travelling in Australia Dr Thomas Wood has written a book, “ Cobbers,” published by the Oxford University Press, largely appreciative of Australia, but with . many shrewd reflections. The author says Australians are prone to an easy optimism, which he attributes first to the climate and secondly to “ Give It a Go, a hard-ridden horse, by Micawber, out of Sunshine.” “ Australians have a genius for improvisation, which is the eldest child of easy optimism,” says Dr Wood. “ One w T ould not make the average Australian one’s first choice if one wanted an organiser, but if one was in a tight corner he would be the best man in the world to get one out of it, if resource, good humour and sheer un~ matchable bravery could do the job.”
