Meeting of the Sumner Council. The Sumner Borough Council met last evening; present—the Deputy Mayor (Councillor H. W. Harriss), Councillors A. Holden, H. L. Wiggins. J. E. Tait, H. E. Kennett and D. F. Oldridge. The borough engineer (Mr G. E. Harper) reported that tar-sealing and repairs to footpaths had been carried out in Euston Street and one side of Head Street between Nayland Street and the Esplanade, also the Esplanade between Head and Eastern Streets, and the Main Road between Cave Terrace and Mulgan's Track. Fair progress was being made with the protection behind the sea-wall from Euston Street, and the Taylor’s Mistake Road widening was also progressing steadily. Various owners of stock had been advised that they would have to keep their cattle off the streets, otherwise definite action would be taken. Mr G. Hodge’s application for a hut site at Taylor’s Mistake was granted. It was decided to take action to stop the annoyance caused to residents by wandering cattle. Applications for grants from the Roadside Beautifying Association und by the Canterbury College registrar for the Museum, were held over until the estimates were prepared. It was decided to ask Mr George Harper to represent the council on the Domains Board, and to thank him "or his services in the past. The Deputy-Mayor congratulated the Town Clerk (Mr J. F. Menzies and his stafff on their fine performance in getting out the balance-sheet shortly after twelve o'clock on the night of March 29. the end of the financial year. This performance would undoubtedly be a record so far as local bodies were concerned. The council owed its congratulations to Mr Menzies and his staff on their work. But for the absence of the Mayor, the balance-sheet could have been placed before the meeting, but he had asked that it be held over until the next meeting. Leaver) presided at a meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council held last evening Councillors W. E. Wilkins, A. E. Lawry, J. Orsborn, J. S. Ainsworth, W. L. A. Taylor, J. K. Worrall. T. E. Thomson, W. Hulme and R. E. Holloway. Permission was granted to the New Brighton sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association to sell poppies in the borough on Poppy Day, April 20. A letter from the South Brighton Progress League drawing attention to the condition of the footpaths in Estuary Road, where M.E.D. poleg had recently been erected, and asking that the bark be removed from all poles brought into the district, as the poles recently brought in were infested with earwigs, was referred to the Works Committee. The letter also dr*ew attention to the condition of the side channels in Estuary Road between M’Clintock’s store and Jervois Street, and Richmond Terrace from Jervois Street to Union and Blake Strelets. The council accepted the sum of 10s 6d sent by the league as the nucleus of a fund for the completion of the Pleasant. Point band rotunda. The council decided that it did not consider that a further conference of the Investigation Committee regarding access to the sea should be called. It was decided that the clubs using the sports grounds should be asked to specify which evenings they desired to use the ground for practice. The council decided to ask British Pavements, Ltd., to treat as urgent the matter of improvements to Rookwood Avenue, at the intersection of Racecourse Road. Mr H. F. Toogood reported upon his inspection of the wall which collapsed near the River Avon bridge. He stated that estimates of the cost of repairing the damage could be obtained from the Christchurch Drainage Board and Messrs P. Graham and Sons (contractors for the bridge) and that when the estimate was received the Main Highways Board should be approached for a contribution. It was agreed to act on the report.
