During the twelve months ended March 31 a considerable improvement took place in the building trade in Wellington city compared with the previous financial year, for though there was little difference in the permit figures for the two years (£345,029 for 1932-33 and £371,971 for 1933-34) the trade has been given a big lift by the commencement of the work of the new railway station which, being a Government build* ing, does not require a permit from the City Council. The contract price for the station was £339.173, so that, in fact, the value of building work carried out, or cony menced, last year was high above that oi 1932-33.
