Words and Phrases.
“Q.O FOR YOUR LIFE” is a slangy phrase, or so most persons would think, yet it has an idiomatic near relation in the Authorised Version of the Bible. It came to light during a search for the word defenestration, which led in the direction of Jezebel. Jezebel had uttered a threat against the life of Elijah, and the chronicle states that “ When he saw that, he arose and went for his -life, and came to Beersheba.” Liane and ronin occur in articles in the “Star” to4ay. The first is a French word, long since adopted as English, meaning a twining or climbing plant with rope-like stems. It is pronounced lee-an, with the stress on the last syllable which has the “ a ” sound of either ask or ale. Ronin is a Japanese word meaning a discharged or ostracised Sumarai, and hence an outcast. TOUCHSTONE.
