The first sea-trading steamer in the world was the Rob Roy, built at Glasgow in 1818. Other early steamers were the Clermont, built in New York; the Charlotte Dundas, built on the Clyde; Argyle; Phoenix; Comet; Royal William; and a Dutch steamer, the Curacao. “ Pink ” was used figuratively to mean the “ flower ” or finest example of excellence; the embodied perfection. See “ Romeo and Juliet,” Act 11., Scene iv.: Mercutio: Nay, I am the very pink of courtesy. Romeo: Pink for flower. Hence ‘ pink ” was used for the most perfect condition or degree of something. “In the pink ”is a colloquial abbreviation of “ in the pink of health.”
