SLIMMING DANGERS.
Chemists’ Petition Against Use of Drugs.
LONDON. April 5 Several recent deaths of girls owing to slimming by the use of drugs of the nitro-phenol group have caused the wholesale chemists to petition the Home Office to place such drugs on the poison list, to be supplied only by doctor’s prescription. Doctors say that apart from the risk of death through overdose, the knowledge of the effect of these remedies is scant. Medicos use the greatest caution in prescribing them. It was reported from London last month that Miss Vivian Bates Philtox, aged nineteen, a pretty New Zealander, who was anxious to become a cabaret star, had died from the effects of nitrophenol poisoning, as a result of misadventure. The coroner issued a serious warning against slimming. Evidence showed that Miss Philcox was under medical advice and took nitro-phenol capsules. Finding that they were not i having the desired effect she took an increased dose without consulting her doctor.
