DAIRYING CRISIS.
Outline of Restriction Scheme. Per Press Association. CARTERTON, April 6. A meeting of the Wairarapa Federated Dairy. Company was not very largely attended, but interesting addresses were given by Mr Ben Roberts (Parkvale) and Mr A. Linton (Lower Valley), the Wairarapa representatives at the recent Dairy Conference. The latter stressed the importance of Great Britain exercising control over the margarine trade before the Dominion could hope for a better market. Interviewed after the meeting by a ‘‘Daily News” reporter, Mr Linton further outlined a scheme by which he thought the ills at present experienced by the dairy farmers might speedily be relieved. His scheme contained the following proposal as a basis of discussion with the British Government. (1) Bring down legislation for the control of the margarine trade by limiting the sale to 150,000 tons per annum and making it compulsory for the incorporation of at least 33 1-3 per cent of butter in all butter substituted sold or manufactured in England. (2) Exercise some penalty and restriction against those countries which are keeping butter at an artificially high level internally and shipping their surplus to England. (3) Double the amount of restriction agreed to by New Zealand on imports of foreign cheese. (4) Any restriction this country agrees to to be applied equally to all countries in the British Empire. (5) Guarantee a New Zealand free market to butter over a period of a year. New Zealand would reduce her cheese export to Britain to a tonnage to be agreed upon by classification and internal control of the industry, he said. This could be done by stopping the manufacture of cheese between sometime in May and September and by controlling large dual factories, which could make either commodities when necessary.
