THE COMPETITIONS.

Active Response and Good Work. Though the holidays have disturbed us a little, a great sheaf of work was presented for our competitions, and it was a pleasure to judge the offerings. The office desk was a litter of green and brown and scarlet leaves, nearly every letter containing one or two leaf messages of beauty. Only one entrant, the prize-winner, really saw the point in “ Autumn’s Message to Mother ’’; but many of the stories received were beautiful little attempts and well written. Copied poems were in great numbers, but the winner gave us a very fine attempt which will appeal to every' one who knows the lovely Avon »n our city. I should dearly have loved fifteen pages to put in all your lovely work, and the task of cutting and selecting has been rather a painful one. I have really given you the very best. The best leaf was from a sorrel plant, brilliantly red and even in colour. The smell of the leaves is drifting to me as I write. Thank-you to the little leaf-gatherers and to all tfie triers everywhere. One sad fact. The drawings were evidently done in a hurry, and as they were not up to our usual high standard no awards were made. We must maintain our progress, Starlets. More autumn work will be printed next Saturday.— A.H. The prize-winners are: “ Autumn’s Message to Mother ”: BRENDA PAYNE, 106, Smith Street, Woolston. Autumn Poem: DOROTHY STANTON, 28, Clifton Street, Addington. The Prettiest Autumn Deaf. RAY LEWIS, 117, Page’s Road, Aranui. All original work on the page counts three marks. Copied counts one, for those who are saving their marks. NEXT SATURDAY. Winners of the “T ” competition will be announced. A quite new competition will be started. A new serial will be commenced. Watch for all these good things. NOTICE. All laurels and marks won this week will appear next Saturday, owing to space needed for Autumn contributions.—A.H.
