Long leases include those of the Blagill estate, in Cumberland, let fer 1000 years from 1611 at a rental of 10s 10*d. and of the Ayle estate, m Northumberland, let for 999 years at 11s 4d a year, with an additional 14s for boon days.” In this connection it must be explained that terms such as 99 years and 999 years have no legal significance, although the former has been identified by some authorities with the span of three generations.
