“ Unedifying Specimen,” Says Dean Inge.

LONDON, March 1. Dean Inge, preaching at St Paul’s, referring to “ that singular product of our civilisation, the modem business man,” said:

When we reflect that man is indolent, that his natural desires are easily satisfied, and that unremitting attention to money-making disqualifies its votaries from enjoying all the things that money can buy—not to think of the finer pleasures of life—it must be clear that nothing but a queer sort of religious self-mortification could induce many persons to choose the life which the successful business man has to lead. “ When the money-maker is really creating wealth for the public service his work is an instrument of value and moral discipline.

“ But now that the financier has dethroned the merchant, and wealth is appropriated rather than created, the connection between religious austerity and business is almost dissolved, and we have the unedifying specimen of the unscrupulous speculator who makes his home his office, while his wife squanders his ill-gotten millions in vulgar and senseless extravagance"
