HERE AT LAST.
Slips Unobtrusively Into
Christchurch.
Unobtrusively, at 3.40 this afternoon, Mr G. B. Shaw slipped into Christchurch. Few people in the Square noticed the small group awaiting him outside the United Service Hotel. Mr Shaw, who is accompanied by Mrs Shaw, stepped nimbly from his car to face newspaper photographers. “ I have done lots of this,” he said, cheerfully posing for them.
While the photographers still had their cameras levelled, a dozen University students mobbed the great man. He listened to them, had a brief conversation with their leader, and walked towards the door. There a man who had been waiting for the greater part of the afternoon said to him: “ Mr Shaw, you said you would answer questions. Why did you come to New Zealand?”
“Why shouldn’t I?” Mr Shaw replied. Then, turning to the knot of reporters, all of whom had sheets of written questions, he said: “I must have given about £50,000 worth of copy since I arrived here.”
Mr and Mrs Shaw were met by Mr and Mrs Bolton, of the United Service Hotel, and disappeared upstairs, while his courier made appointments with those privileged to ask for them. Tomorrow morning, Mr and Mrs Shaw will go on a motor tour of Christchurch.
