LEAVING EXAM.

New Certificate Syllabus is Announced. PARTIAL PASS POSSIBLE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 5. School-leaving certificate examination regulations, which were gazetted tonight, set out that the examination is to be held annually in conjunction with the entrance examination of the New Zealand University. Every applicant for a certificate must furnish evidence of completion at a secondary, technical, combined district high or registered private secondary school of at least a three years’ course of secondary instruction cf a specified nature. To qualify for a certificate, the candidate must pass an examination in English and at least four other subjects. The candidate may not enter at one time for more than six subjects, but where both arithmetic and algebra and geometry are taken, he may enter for seven. Following are the subjects for the examination:—(l) English, (2) history, (3) geography, (4) Latin, (5) French, (6) German, (7) Greek, (8) Maori, (9) arithmetic, (10) algebra and geometry, (11) mechanics, (12) heat and light, (13) electricity and magnetism, (14) chemistry or (15) home science, (16) botany, (17) agriculture, (18) music, H 9) drawing, (20) technical drawing, (21) economics, (22) bookkeeping, (23) shorthand and typing, (24) needlework, (25) housecraft, (26) technical electricity, (27) heat engines, (28) applied mechanics, (29) plane trigonometry (not with arithmetic), (30) physiology and hygiene, (31) general biology. Candidates in technical electricity must also take electricity and magnetism and candidates in heat engines must also take heat and light. Candidates may obtain a partial pass by succeeding in at least four subjects and may complete in any subsequent year.
