TELEPHONE SYSTEM.
Investigation is Now Under Way.
The Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce met last evening, Mr A. F. Wright presiding. The Associated Chambers wrote advising that the secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department had stated that there had been delay in introducing the personal telephone call system because a Departmental Committee had been investigating the whole of the telegraph system as a preliminary to an Investigation of the telephone gystem. The executive of the Associated Chambers asked that the matter of building construction to resist earthquakes should be taken up with the local authorities. Mutual Trading Concerns.
The special committee set up to consider the taxing- of mutual trading concerns recommended that the council should affirm the following principle—- “ That trading enterprises, whether owned by the State, by municipalities, or by co-operative or mutual trading associations, should be taxed upon an equal basis with the proprietary business concerns with whom they compete.” The report was adopted.
