WOMEN’S GOLF.

Play in Championship at Shirley. At Shirley yesterday play began in the women's Easter golf tournament, and the two qualifying rounds of the Canterbury championship (eight to qualify) and concurrent stroke handicaps were played. There was nothing outstanding in the play and the scoring was by no means up to tournament golf. Miss Fleming’s 79 in the morning round was the best effort. A conspicuous entry is that of Miss W. Barns-Graham, of Gisborne, holder of the Wellington and Auckland provincial titles. Miss Barns-Graham was obviously not herself and* did not do herself justice, but succeeded in qualifying in second place for the championship. Her play in the match play will be watched with interest. Tn the first stroke handicap for seniors 1-14 inclusive Miss Fleming returned the best card. 75 net. and in the correspondimr event in the afternoon Mrs W. E. and Miss K. Johnston were equal. The rioxt eight best scores after those who qualified for the cb amnion ship qualified for the Shirtrophy. SENIOR STROKE HANDICAP. Second.
