OBITUARY.
Walter Martin. One of Canterbury’s early settlers, Mr Walter Martin, died at Christchurch to-day. Mr Martin was born in 1854 and was a son of Walter Martin, of the firm of England and Martin, contractors and timber merchants. He came to New Zealand with his parents in the Robert Small in the year 1860, and was educated at the old West Christchurch School and later at Mr Cook’s School. He was employed in the Department of. Justice for many years until he retired on account of illhealth. During the war, Mr Martin volunteered for active service and was sent to Samoa with the Relief Force. With this force he served for some months, and was then discharged to enter the civil administration. For seven years he acted as clerk of the District Court and registrar of the High Court of Western Samoa. Since then he lived with his family in Christchurch and for some years in Sydney. He leaves a widow and three daughters, Mrs B. J. Ager, Mrs R. J. Nixon and Miss Lorna Martin.
