SPORTSMAN’S DEATH.

Ex-Representative Cricketer for Canterbury. Following an illness that had kept him to his bed for some weeks, Mr Louis Richard Brunton died at his home, 123, Canon Street, St Albans, yesterday. Mr Brunton was widely known in Canterbury as a sportsman, cricketer and angler. A member of the St Albans Cricket Club for a number of years, Mr Brunton had a successful career as wicketkeeper in the senior grade competition. In 1913-14 he succeeded C. Boxshall in the Canterbury eleven, and but for the intervention of the war, when there was no play in senior grade cricket, must have gone far in the game. Followers of cricket speak highly of his skill. After the war he again found a place in the Canterbury side and represented the province until 1920. Apart from his ability as a wicketkeeper Mr Brunton was also a good batsman, and in senior and representative games proved himself a cricketer of* real worth.

On giving up cricket Mr Brunton made angling his hobby and sport, and in a few seasons was as well known on the trout and salmon rivers of Canterbury as he had been on the cricket field. He was a keen fisherman and followed his hobby with great success. Mr Brunton’s genial disposition and kindly nature made him a favourite among sportsmen of all codes, and he had many friends throughout Canterbury. who will receive the news of his death with much regret. Mr Brunton was 43 years of age. He is survived by his wife.
