NEW STREET LAMPS.
Given Trial in Papanui Road.
The experimental gas discharge electrie lights, now being tested by the M.E.D., were installed on Papanui Road yesterday, and were lit up last evening. Lights were placed on both sides of the road and over the centre of the road as far as Merivale Lane. The lighting was brilliant, particularly in the road immediately north of Bealey Avenue, where the double system was operating. The lamps cast a wide beam, of a slightly greenish colour, which is not unpleasing. One of the most experienced motorists in the city, discussing the system said it was incomparably better than anything hitherto tried in Christchurch. He found, however, that when cars with brilliant headlights were approaching, the double lighting was rather disturbing. This was not so noticeable with the centre lights.
