TROTTING NOTES.

m m ® m m ®® m is m s m id si m m m m ® THE first race at Cheviot to-morrow will start at 11.45 a.m. * * * * Acceptances for the trotting events at the Oamaru Jockey Club's meeting will close this evening. Y * * * , The single pool system of betting will be in operation at the Wanganui Trotting Club’s meeting, and in races where there are eight and more starters three dividends will be declared. SINGLE POOL. The method of betting at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting will be on the old system, that of a single pool and two dividends. NON-STARTER. The pacer Argolis is under a cloud and will not fulfil his engagements at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow. Argolis is a member of W. J. Tomkinson’s stable. * ❖ * * Sylvia Sydney is in good order for her Cheviot engagement. She won at Oamaru in January, and should go well in the Mackenzie Handicap tomorrow. HER GOOD FORM. Encounter’s good form at Wellington and at Timaru points to her having a royal chance of winning the Bollard Memorial Handicap at Cheviot to-mor- * * * *■ Golden Cross is good enough if he is only willing in the Spotswood Handicap at Cheviot to-morrow. He has been a big disappointment, but to-mor-row he has a golden opportunity. * * * ❖ Stella Derby and Harvestin are speedy pacers, and should be able to concede their mediocre opponents 12yds and beat them in the Mina Handicap at Cheviot. SPECIAL TRAINS. In connection with the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow passen-) gers will travel by the ChristchurchParnassus train, which will leave at 7.55 a.m. A special fast train taking horses and their attendants will leave Christchurch at 6.30 a.m and will take on horses at Addington, Papanui, Belfast. Kaiapoi, Rangiora and Amberley. This train is due at Mina at 10.5 am. A special passenger train connecting at Waipara with the evening train for Waikari will leave Mina at 5.55 p.m. and is due at Christchurch at 8.59 p.m. The horse train will leave on its return journey at 6.15 p.m. ELYO IS WELL. At the Ashburton County Racing Club’s spring meeting Elvo showed to advantage in a two-mile race, and she has been successful since then. She is on the limit of the Cheviot Cup Handicap, and such an improved pacer and good stayer should go well to-morrow. * * * * The novice trotter Walter Wrack has trained on all right since he raced at New Brighten last month, and he has only to repeat his private form to be in the money at Cheviot. A SPRINTER. Happy Bird is a quick beginner and is all right up to a mile and a quarter. He is engaged in two sprint races at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting. He is in J. S. Shaw’s stable and is fit and ready to win. * * * sk Sky Wink is a nippy pacer capable of reeling off a good mile and a quarter. He ran a creditable third at Motukarara recently and has improved since then. He has two engagements at Cheviot to-morrow and should race prominently. * * Y Y Young Travis is a class above his opponents in*the Cheviot Cup Handicap, and if the field was a small one he would be a hot favourite. But with eighteen horses in the field he is likely to strike all sorts of trouble on the trip. If he enjoys anything like a clear run his owner will have to make a speech in the birdcage after the race. NEW BRIGHTON CANDIDATES. Betty Wrack, Finnebrogue, Recess, Golden Dollar, Amonos and Vagabond King will represent New Brighton in the Cheviot Cup Handicap. Betty Wrack is in the pink of condition and she is capable of seeing out two miles. Recess has done well this season. She is a very reliable mare and is improving in stamina, but it is questionable if she can beat Betty Wrack over a journej r . Golden Dollar has raced well at recent meetings, but his form has indicated that a mile and a half is as far as he can go. Vagabond King is very well. He has won over short distances, and so will have to be taken on trust, and on anything that Finnebrogue has done Betty Wrack and Recess look to be hi£ superiors. Of the New Brighton horses, Betty Wrack and Recess have the best prospects in the Cup. WALLA WALLAS GREAT “GO.” Walla Walla competed in a mile race at Victoria Park, Sydney, on Monday, March 5, and despite the fact that he had to concede his field 84vds, he finished close up in fourth place. The “ Australian Trotting Record ” states that the field was one of the best that has assembled for a Flying Handicap, and it provided one of the most exciting finishes witnessed for some time The horses engaged in this event were: j Walla Walla (2min lOijsec) Childe- j wood’s Choice (2min 11 l-ssec), Iluka j Derby (2min 124 sec). May’s Machine (4min 28sec for two miles), Wilverlv i (2min 13sec), Hurly Burly (2min 13 2-ssec), Globe Pick (2min 13 2-ssec), j Machine King (2min 14sec and better 1 time getting beaten), Maphada Boy i (2min 14 3-ssec). At the start Iluka ! Derby lost ground, allowing Machine ! King to take up the running from ! Maphada Boy, Iluka Derby and Globe • Pick, with Hurly Burly following. The ! order was much the same for the first half, although Hurlv Burly broke and dropped back, while Childewood’s Choice and Walla Walla were making up ground. Over the last half the field closed up, and w r ith two furlongs to go it looked anyone’s race, but down the straight May’s Machine finished on best to win bv half a length from Childewood’s Choice, with Maphada > Boy a similar distance away third. Walla Walla was the closest of fourths. May’s Machine was handicapped to go 2min 13sec and did 2min 13 2-ssec. Walla Walla (unhoppled) lost a little ground on account o f making a break. He was timed to pace the mile in 2min 7sec, cutting out his last four furlongs in lmin 2sec. •
