TWO WOMEN HURT.
Motorist Arrested After Smash. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 18. Two young women cyclists were knocked down and seriously injured on the Great North Road at New Lynn about 9.30 on Saturday evening by a motor-car, the driver of which failed to stop after the collision. The women are:— Marjorie Shackleton, single, aged twenty-one years, a machinist, of Grey Lynn; head injuries, fractured thigh, fractured arm, shock and abrasions; condition serious. Irene Barker, single, age‘d twentytwo years, a machinist, of Kingsland; head' injuries and fractured shoulder blade; condition not serious. Both young women were taken to the Auckland Hospital. A search for the vehicle concerned was immediately begun by the police, three detectives and two constables being engaged. Shortly after midnight a motorist was arrested. He will appear in the Police Court on a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor vehicle. Motorist Remanded. I’er Press- Association. AUCKLAND, February 19. David Robert John Ellis, twenty-five years of age, a labourer, was remanded to-day on £250 bail on charges of being intoxicated in charge of a car, and of negligently driving a car while intoxicated, and causing bodily injury to Irene Barker. Miss Barker and another girl, Marjorie Shackleton, were knocked down by a car last night. Both were admitted to the hospital, and Miss Barker’s condition is serious.
