Address to Women’s Meeting. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, February 18. At a meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers 1 Union, Mrs Hamber presiding, a letter was received from Nurse Maude thanking members for their good wishes. Mrs Penney reported having received a letter from the Dominion secretary expressing sympathy with the members who had lost their crops through the hailstorm. Mr W. R. Hammond spoke on the aims of the Farmers’ Union and introduced Mr John Brown, who gave an interesting address on the working of the union. During the afternoon Miss A. Ruddock played a pianoforte solo. The winners of the competitions were as follows: Plate of apples—Mrs Penney l. Mrs G. Scales 2. Mrs. E. M. Begg 3. Spike of gladiolus--Mrs Penney l, Mrs G. Scales 2, Mrs Hamber 3. Picnic at Tinwald. The weather was dull but line for a picnic held at the Tinwald Domain yesterday afternoon by a party of Cubs in charge of Misses G. M’Hraith and O. Spedding, Cubmistresses. About sixty scholars and parents from the Baptist Sunday School also held their annual picnic in the Tinwald Domain. Sale of Work. Tn aid - of missionary work, the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Hive of Busy Bees held a sale of work on Saturday afternoon and good business was done at the well-laden stalls. The stallholders were: Work—Gwen Wear, Isabel M’Kemde, Lilian and Vera M’Nicol and Ella Clayton. Cakes— Lucy Hill, Ivy Shierlaw, Jessie Shepherd and Kathleen -Ken ny. Sweets — Lorecn Patterson, Jean Dellow, Nina Lithgow and Betty Aitken. Jumble — Phyllis Wilson, Peggy Baker, Greta Turner and Joan Aitken. Produce— Minnie f'relliii, Ethel Chapman and Eileen Shepherd. Weekly Health Report. A case of tuberculosis at Riverside was the only notifiable case reported to the health authorities last week. Personal. Mr F. Curtis left lor Dunedin on Saturday to attend the conference of the Institute of Opticians. Lieutenant 11. J. T. Osborne and Bandsmen S. G. Teale, B. Miller, T. Miller, E. Withell and L. Porter left for Wellington on Saturday evening to take part in the Dominion band contest. Mr E. Doherty, one of the foundation members of the Mid-Canterbury Model Aero Club, who leaves for Picton on Monday, was met toy fellow members and presented with a fountain
