The origin of “funk” as meaning “ coward ” or “ to be in a tright,” etc., is perhaps traceable to the German fink or finke, meaning (1) finch; (2) a rakish, rascally fellow; (3) in student slang, a student not attached to any corps, and therefore (4) spiritless, timid, cne who will not tight duels; i.c., cowardly.
