YEAR OF PROGRESS.

Hare wood Golf Club’s Report. Extensive alterations and improvements to the course were carried out during the year, states the annual report of the Harewood Golf Club, to be presented to members at the annual meeting on February 27. The excellence of ihe greens had been fully maintained, tees had been enlarged, approaches to greens turfed, and several greens remodelled. Most of the fairways had been top-dressed and sown, but it was evident that treatment similar to that given to Nos. 2 and 10 fairways was necessary for success. The present watering system was inadequate, as it served only six greens at a time, and if approaches to greens and portions of fairways were to be kept in a satisfactory condition an extension of the present system would be necessary. The record number of 12,000 pines was planted this year. A new’ and comfortable lounge has been built in the clubhouse for women members, who were to be congratulated upon their success in raising funds for this purpose. The dining-room had been extended, providing greater comfort to members. The accounts and balance-sheet show an excess of income over expenditure of £127 4s, after allowing £373 14s 6d for depreciation. Marked and increased enthusiasm characterised the club’s weekly competitions. More than 90 members regularly took part, and no fewer than 56 earned a reduction in handicap. A. R. Blank won the club championship. Inter-club matches were played with the Lyttelton, Rangiora and Ashburton clubs. The club is indebted to Mr D. Crozier for the gift of the Canterbury provincial amateur championship cup, and to Mr N. E. Tingev for the handicap teams match cup, competed for at the North Canterbury amateur championship tournament.
