SHOTS IN TUNNEL MAZE. lift,-eight men staged a daring escape trom the central solitary confinement prison at Barcelona, and 32 of them were recaptured very soon after a dramatic chase through Barcelona’s sewers An Englishman, Mr. William' Lamb, Mho was detained last August in connection with an alleged hold-up, refused to join in the dash for freedom. Those who dul, gangsters and murderers among them, effected their escape by means of a tunnel communicating with the city’s sewers. Immediately the alarm was given * the Civil Guard was called out, and 32 of the men were caught as they were emerging from the sewers. Shots were fired to intimidate the fugitives. Armed guards went hot on the heels of the 26 men who remained at large. The notorious gangster and racketeer of Barcelona, Vitali, was among those who took part in the chase through a maze of underground tunnels. Another batch of 22 prisoners escaped from the steamer Uruguay, which was recently converted into a prison ship.
