Harvesting Resumed in District. WEATHER IMPROVES. (Special to the “Star.”) ASHBURTON, February 15. Following dull weather yesterday and a fall of 13 points of rain, a sweltering heat characterised the weather conditions in Ashburton to-day. The rain put a temporary stop to harvesting operations yesterday, but to-day they were again in full swing. The carting of grain has already commenced and motor lorries are busy conveying sacks of wheat to the grain stores and the railways. Tinwald School Committee. At a meeting of the Tinwald School Committee, the chairman (Mr J. H. Harper) congratulated the teachers on their work during the past year. It was reported that the roll number had decreased this year, the total now being 158. Miss M. Raven had been appointed to a position on the staff. The resignation of Mr Ede was accepted. The head master (Mr I. F. M’Donald) recommended that in future the school picnic trains should be in charge of a teacher. Further arrangements were made for the school flower show*. Mr S. W. Gower reported that Messrs Millichamp and Clark would officiate as judg-s The arrangement of a treasure hunt was left to Miss Doak and Mr Gower. Messrs I. F. M’Donald, S. W. Gower and A. B. Simpson were appointed a sub-com-mittee. Excursion to Timaru. The Ashburton Borough School’s annual excursion to Timaru was held to-day, over 200 pupils and parents spending an enjoyable day on Caroline Bay. The weather conditions last evening were not promising, otherwise a much larger number w-ould have taken part in the outing. Lodge Meeting. The N.G. (Sister D. Bolton) presided over a meeting of Daphne Lodge, 1.0.0. F., held last evening. Five members were reported sick. Brothers Moore and Parsons were re-elected delegates to the annual meeting of the United Friendly Societies’ Association. It was decided to hold an initiation next lodge night. Personal. Mr I. F. M’Donald’s resignation as head master of the Tinwald School was accepted with regret at last night’s meeting of the committee. Mr M’Donald has accepted the position of head master of the Shannon School, Wellington Province, and it was decided to write to the Shannon committee congratulating members on the appointment.
