RACING AT RICCARTON.

Canterbury Jockey Club’s Summer Meeting Held To-morrow.

REVIEW OF RECENT FORM,

A S A RLLE, the one-dav summer fixture of the Canterbury i , Clul ? is ver y largely confined to Riccarton horses, nut on this occasion a dozen performers from other centres are among the acceptors. Included in the visitors is Synagogue, 10 sucli a favourable impression when he won two races at Trentham last month.

V in and place betting will operate. The club announces that the machine ■will close on time. Recent rains have made Riccarton remarkably green and fresh for this time of year. The going is likely to be excellent if the weather keeps fine. Racing will begin with the 1.5 pjn. HANDICAP, of 125 to»s. Minimum weight 9st. Nine furlongs. Admiral Sam Smith 9 4 Drake 10 9 High Rank 9 4 Rational IJ. 10 4 Oallivanter 9 0 Rm Tin Tin 10 3 Adult 9 0 Niggerhead 10 3 Sky Rover 9 0 Courtyard 10 3 Speakeasy 9 0 Admiral Drake has not raced £or months. In his best form this would be a gift. Rational 11. was unplaced over hurdles at Wingatui and Gallivanter fared similarly. The former is fit and might shape well. Rin Tin Tin won the high-weight mile at Oamaru on January 2 with 102. Adult 9.7 being third. Rin Tin Tin was unplaced in the mile Stewards’ Handicap at Wingatui last week. Xiggerhead was third in the W yndham Cup, one mile and a quarter, on January 1. but was twice unplaced at the Southland meeting on January 2 and 3. Courtyard, now a stable-mate of Xiggerhead, showed good form at Trentham last month. He was fourth in the Anniversary, and ran a dead-heat with True Shaft for second to Miladi over a mile on the second day and was fourth over a mile on the last day. Sam Smith, who raced well on the West Coast during the holidays, was unplaced in two highweights at Trentham. High Rank wno won a high-weight mile and a quarter at Trentham, failed twice at the Dunedin meeting. Skv Rover showed some promise on the West Coast circuit, where he was not suited by the tracks. Speakeasv has no recent form. Courtyard, High Rank and Sam Smith mav prove most popular. 1.40 p.m. TRIAL STAKES, of 125 sovs. Six furlongs. Grampian 8 5 Maroha 8 0 Imperial Red Dance S 0 Spear 8 5 Bright Shade 7 11 Knowledge 8 5 Copenna 7 11 Silk Arrow 8 5 Scarlet Gay Robe 8 2 Rambler 7 11 Gay spear 8 0 Silver Brier 7 11 Liege Lord 8 0 Six of this field met in the five furlong Trial at the Hororata meeting at Riccarton on December 16, when Silver Jest won, Imperial Spear was second, • Grampian third, Maroha seventh and ©ilk Arrow eighth, with Copenna and Gayspear further back. Maroha, Silk Arrow and Grampian have not started since, but the last-named has worked -veil with Silver Ring. Gayspear was ..sejond in two novice events on the West Coast, where Copenna had six unplaced races. Imperial Spear forfeited a winning chance in the Trial Plate at Trentham last .month through his saddle slipping. Bright Shade finished eighth in the Brackendale - Handicap, seven furlongs, at the Hororata meeting. Knowledge had one unplaced run as a two-year-old three years ago. Scarlet Rambler, one of the team of H. and A. Cutts, had one unplaced run last season. The stable provided first and second in this race last year. Gay . Robe has not raced since last season, when her only placing was second (to Adult) in the Waimate Novice in July. Liege Lord’s racing i s confined to one unplaced run last season and two similar experiences during the spring of this. He can gallop, but makes a noise. Red Dance and Silver Brier were unplaced in the Trial and Novice Wingatui last week. Red Dance second to Hot Stuff over five furlongs at Washdvke in October. Imperial Spear, Grampian and Scarlet Rambler may make most appeal. 3.20 p.m. HIDDLE PARK PLATE, of 200 sovs. For two and three-year-olds, six furtongs. Sir Chas. They both hold other engagements. n? P / ,St ~ referfed to under the Craven Trumpet Blast made his debut at Wingatui last week and shaped promisingly in his two unplaced efforts. Synagogue at Trentham last month scored brilliant wins in the Fitzherbert and Nursery Handicaps. At the same meeting, Variant was second to Diatomous. She finished fast but was beaten by three lengths. Diatom, jus • a -n 3 y WOn * n 58isec and Synagogue in o9lsec. In the C.J.C. MIDSUMMER HANDICAP, of 250 sovs One mile and a quarter L Silver Ring 9 0 Kins March 7 u Cricket Bat 8 9 Rocket 7 8 Mi nerval 8 8 Ramo 7 2 ATff* nUc $ 4 Revision 7 2 Shatter 8 0 Some Shamble 7 0 In this race also, Chokebore Lodge has two uncoupled candidates—Cricket Bat and Rocket. The former was going 'well in the Wellington Cup when he was injured and pulled up. He has galloped well this week. Rocket has been disappointing in his more recent races, but he worked well on Thursday, and Riccarton suits him. Argentic failed badly in his races at Trentham. Silver Ring has won his last four races, two of which were over a mile. There

seems every reason to think that he will manage ten furlongs all right. His late owner, Mr D. Fraser, always considered that he would. Minerval failed at Trentham. but his win in the Auckland Cup and subsequent second in the Auckland R.C. Handicap form a very different story. He had 8.9 when King s Knave just beat him over a mile and a half. Shatter finished fifth m the mile Anniversary Handicap at Trentham last month. The best of his more recent performances was to run second to Kiltowyn in the Auckland bummer Cup, one mile and a quarter, on December 2S. He won the Midsummer a year ago with 5.4 and was second in 1932 with 7.5. He is galloping well King March finished second in the Wellington Cup and third "? t! T " 5- C ' Handicap. 1-Ie failed in the Dunedin Cup, but was second to \ entrac, finishing well, last Saturday. Ramo failed at Trentham. His most recent w ,n was gained in the C.T.C. rendalton Handicap, one mile and a quarter, on November 6, when he had if. and scored from Rocket 7.13 and Minerval 7.12. Revision, who won the mile and a quarter Otaio Plate at Riccarton in November, has won thrice Since. The most recent of these wins was m the Marlborough Cup, one mile and a quarter, last Saturday. Some bfiamble, who was second in the Otaio Plate, meets Revision 61b better. He was unplaced in the Dunedin Cup. If biHer Ring goes to the post, he will na\e a full share of support. In his absence. King March, Cricket Bat and Mmefva l may claim most cbnsidera--3.35 p.m. HALSWELL HANDICAP, of 125 sovs Seven furlongs. lan’s March 9 0 YVeathpriv 7 , Roval PPrince 8 13 Hot St uff 7 5 Ro * al w Sibella 7 4 Drum m £ I re ra ? l! gK3£f v, ~ l l Do?ran aiHft 7 \z Wi,d Sky 70 lans March won the Berwick Handicap, seven furlongs, at Wingatui last <veek with 8.10. Royal Amphora, m his only recent start, won over five furlongs at Trentham last month'. He ran .• h Q to a head over seven furlongs Geraldine in September. Ine and Weatherly have not raced for a long time. Drumfire made no show in the Melrose Handicap at Irentham last month. Doiran and Grand Review were both unplaced twice at Wingatui last week. Wild Sky, who fared similarly there, ran a fair race in the Kelburn Handicap at Trentham. Hot Stuff at Trentham last month was third over six furlongs and -seventh- over -seven furlongs. - Sibella, who paid the big win dividend at Motukarara, was twice unplaced at Riccarton in November. Cinders ran tw o close seconds in mile races at Reefton last month. Dollar Prince, Royal Amphora and lan’s March are likely to be well fancied. 4.15 p.m. CRAVEN PLATE HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. Seven furlongs. Meprisant 8 9 The MasCopyist 7 13 querader 7 8 Kerbside 7 12 Cranford 7 3 Miladi 7 12 Guarantee 7 l Meta! Bird 7 0 Meprisant has had three races this season. He was once unplaced at the Grand National meeting. At Riccarton, in November, he won the mile Epsom Handicap by five lengths with 9.3. He was subsequently unplaced in the Avon Handicap. He is working satisfactorily. Copyist at Trentham was unplaced in the Telegraph, sixth in the Metropolitan, and second with 7.6, beaten a head by Silver Ring 8.10, in the City—all six-furlong races. He won the Electric Handicap at Ellerslie on December 28. Kerbside had 7.4 when she won the Publicans’ at Wingatui last week. She failed in the Flying on Saturday. Miladi won over a mile at Trentham last month, and again at Bl ® nheim test Friday. The Ma sque- , rader has not raced since early in November. He won the Dunedin Guineas, but did not shape so well in later races. Cranford was twice unplaced at Trentham, but in between he ran Diatomous to a neck in the six-furlong Metropolitan, with Silver Streak third. Guarantee at W ingatui was unplaced over a mile, but was second to Hula Belle in the Flying. Metal Bird was third to Silver Ring and Assemble over a mile at Oamaru on January 2. He was receiving only lib from the winner. Copyist is doubly engaged. If this race should be chosen for him he should carry good support. In his absence. Kerbside and Meprisant may attract most attention. 4.55 p.m. LYTTELTON PLATE HANDICAP of 1-5 sovs. Five furlongs. Capital 8 2 Orris 7 13 Tunneller 8 2 Back Thrust 7 13 Liberate 8 2 Trumpet Brian Bor u 8 2 Blast 7 8 Testator 8 2 Cup Bearer 7 8 Chidden 7 13 Debutantes in this race are Tunneller, Liberate, Brian Boru, Chidden, Orris and Back Thrust. Tunneller and Back Thrust will be coupled on the machine. Trumpet Blast is in the same stable but in different ownership. He is also in the Middle Park Plate. Orris and Chidden will be another bracketed pair. Capital, at the Wairarapa meeting on January 1, ran third to Silly Owl and Morbury. On the second day Morbury, who was coupled with him, won. Capital (7.13) was second and Synagogue (7.5) third. Disguise was twice unplaced at Dunedin at Christmas. Cup Bearer ran third and second in those Wingatui races, and at the Cup meeting last week was unplaced in the Champagne Stakes and third in the Hopeful Handicap. Top Coat was unplaced in the Oamaru Trial ,on January 2, also in the Dunedin Champagne Stakes ; Testator was unplaced in the trial Stakes at the Hororata meeting. Trumpet Blast showed some promise at Wingatui last week. Capital and Cup Bearer have most in the way of form.
