OBITUARY.

Mrs Ellen Brightling. The death occurred after a short illness of Mrs Ellen Brightling, widow of the late Mr John Brightling, the founder of the carrying and brick manufacturing firm of John Brightling, Ltd. Mrs Brightling, who has been living in retirement since the death of her husband in 1928,- was eighty years of age. Mrs Brightling, whose maiden name was Curry, was born in County Armagh, Ireland. She married Mr Isaac Brown, with whom she came out to New Zealand in 1875. Mr Brown, who was engaged upon many of the early con-' tracts in this district, died some years later, and the widow married the late Mr Brightling in 1896. Mrs Brightling was of a quiet disposition and had many friends. She was greatly interested in flowers and gardening, but perhaps her chief interest was found in working for St John’s Church, Latimer Square, of which she was a member for many years. Mrs Brightling is survived by two children of her first marriage, Mr J. L. Brown and Mrs C. Netting, both of Christchurch. She leaves also six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The funeral will leave the residence of Mrs Brightling’s daughter, Mrs Netting, 27 Bristol Street, at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Mrs M. A. M’Donald. The death occurred at her residence, Jackson’s Road, Fendalton, on Sunday, of, Mrs Mary Ann M’Donald. Mrs M’Donald, who was born at Heathcote in 1861, was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Jessie Wheeler, who arrived in New Zealand in 1842, her father being attached to the 65th Regiment, which was sent out from England to participate in the Maori Wars. Mrs M’Donald spent the early part of her life at Heathcote, subsequently moving to Rangiora. In 1876 she came to live in Christchurch and in 1882 she married nr M ’ D °nald, who survives her. Airs M Donald spent the greater part of her married life at Fendalton, where she resided for nearly forty* years Besides her busband, Mrs M’Donald leaves a family of two sons and four daughters to mourn their loss. Two sons predeceased her, one being killed in the Great War.
