TOBACCONISTS UNITE.
Dominion Federation Formed. At a. conference of tobacconists representing all parts of New Zealand, held in Wellington on February 6, 7 and 8, it was unanimously decided to form a New Zealand Tobacconists’ and Hairdressers’ Federation. It was stated that the necessity for a federation had long been realised by those in the trade and, in view of recent amending legislation, it was considered that the time was never more opportune for it. It was of vital importance to tobacconists to be well organised. For the purpose of control the Dominion was grouped into four commercial districts. Christchurch is to take from the Clarence River to Glenavy, on the east coast, and from Karamea to Weheka on the West Coast, and to compile a directory and organise the trade in that territory. It was pointed out that tobacconists and hairdressers should realise that the federation was a group of associations, and only by joining an association could they assist in the biggest forward step yet in the history of the trade. Federation officials were elected as follows:—President, Mr E. J. Humphreys (Wellington); vice-president, Mr R, A. Campbell (Christchurch); executive, the presidents of the four central associations or their nominees, two members of the North Island sub-asso-ciations, and one from South Island sub-associations; secretary and treasurer, Mr L. Paget (Wellington) ; auditor, Mr R. Armit (Wellington); central advisory committeee, the president and Messrs Armit, W. Bradley and T. G. M’Cleary (Wellington).
